I read in my owner's manual (for a 1995 Saturn SL2) that it is very bad to overinflate or underinflate the tires, and that you should only inflate them at the recommended pressure written on a label on the driver's door (add 4 PSI if they are hot). The last two times I had repairs done on my car (the first one was for a thermostat change; the second one was for a brake job), the auto mechanics inflated my tire at 34 PSI (cold). But my car label says to inflate the front tires at 30 PSI and the rear tires at 26 PSI. So why don't the auto mechanics follow the car label recommendations? Is it because my owner's manual is misleading? Or is it because they are too ignorant? This would be scary, as it seems to me that tire pressure should be fundamental knowledge on a car. How can I trust them then when they say that my fuel filter needs to be changed if they don't even know that overflating tires cause them to wear out more quickly (e.g. see http://www.aa1car.com/library/2003/ic100368.htm )Why do the auto mechanics overinflate my tires?
The plaque or sticker on your door is from the auto makers they know how much air gives you the most comfortable ride for the tpye of vehicle you have. The tire can handle more air but the automakers want the car to ride its best when you buy it. Some people like more air because you get better gas mileage. I've contacted many tire sales shops and they all give different awnsers. My best suggestion is to go with what feels best i the ride you get. If you want a softer ride go by the door sticker if you want better gas mileage then pu 34 or 35 in them. It has nothing to do with anything but the ride you get and how you like it. Having your tires at 35 or 30 is not going to make that much difference in the wear of your tires as long as you get them rotated every 6k.Why do the auto mechanics overinflate my tires?
So YOU can lower the pressure to make all equal with use of a compressor. Why do the auto mechanics overinflate my tires?
Manufactures recommended tire pressure is just a suggestion in my opinion. Some tires will wear the outside of the tire if inflated to manufactures spec in which case if you would overinflate you can get more life from the tire. Overinflating makes the tire wear more in the middle of the tire. Of course, there is a cut off on how much to overinflate. I don't like to go about 5 psi. This is done all the time and I do it on my own car. Don't sweat it but, if you want to, keep an eye how your tires are wearing. They should wear evenly the whole way across. Why do the auto mechanics overinflate my tires?
You should follow the car manufacturers recomendation if you want a ride. If you want tire wear and handling, It would be best to follow the tire manufacturers recomendation on the sidewall of the tire. The tire manufacturers should know best how to inflate thier brand of tire. I have advised many people how to keep thier tires inflated. They should be inflated to the tire manufacturers specs. You should not have abnormal wear or bad handling following thier directions. If you have abnormal wear following the tire manufacturers recomendations, you may possibly have an alignment problem. In that case you should follow the car manufacturers recomendation on the alignment specs. ie; are you going to let the tire manufacturer tell you how to align the car??Why do the auto mechanics overinflate my tires?
I have found that the maufacturers tire pressures are a bit low.Sure the ride is softer but I like the feel of my car a bit tighter so I go over by 3 to 5 psiWhy do the auto mechanics overinflate my tires?
Usually the mechanic will set it to the tire's max inflation if they can't find a chart on the door handy.
The manufacturer came up with it's recomendations as the best %26quot;overall%26quot; pressure to inflate it... For ride, for wear , for traction etc.
inflating it 4 psi won't affect it at all other than giving a almost unnoticeable harsher ride....
The underinflation/overinflation is people who never check pressures (and the tire is at 10-15psi like so many that had tires fail a few years ago) or people inflate as the article says till they look full (which usually is 60psi..too much for a tire to take normally without blowing up when it got hot and starts expanding)
4 psi won't kill you or the tires. they will wear a hair more if overinflated,up to a 1/32 difference, but that is usually for tires where the manufacturer recommends say 30 psi and the person inflates it to tire max of 44psi (as some tires allow for)Why do the auto mechanics overinflate my tires?
I seem to remember something about tires not at the right psi causing you to use more gas/cut down on your miles per gallon. Why do the auto mechanics overinflate my tires?
The recommendation if for the tires that came on your car. Your car is 11 years old, my guess is that you have different tires on it. Look at the sidewall of the tire, what is the recommended pressure? Why do the auto mechanics overinflate my tires?
There could be a few factors at play here. 1. Your guage might read slightly different than your mechanics. 2. If your tires are at a little higher pressure than they are suppose to be it is actually a good thing. It makes the car handle better and also improves your gas mileage by reducing the tires rolling resistance. 3. Most tires say right on them to inflate to 32 PSI I don't know what kind of tires came stock on your car but they are probably not the ones that the manufacturer put the specs on the car for.
If I were you I would ask the mechanic to explain to you why he is putting more air in your tires and I bet he will be more than happy to tell you. If you ask him to stop doing it he most likely will. If he checked your tire pressure for you while he was changing the thermostat he probably was just trying to help you out so that you will come back for any repairs that you might need in the future. It sounds to me like you have a mechanic that cares about your business. Just some food for thought. Hope I have been helpful

I need a step by step guide on how to change a water pump in a 94 plymouth sundance duster?
ok we changed the thermostat, relay, fan motor, and 2 sensors already and the car keeps over heating i asked another car question on here about what could be the problem and everyone on here said water pump and every car savvy person i know said water pump....so if anyone has any other ideas throw them out....we are running out of ideas...hopefully someone can help with this step by step guide on how to change a water pump!!!! thanks everyoneI need a step by step guide on how to change a water pump in a 94 plymouth sundance duster?
Buy a HAYNES Manual at the Auto Parts Store $20 or on-line $25, they specialize in step-by-step plus pictures for the whole car. Overheating isn't the only problem that will occur.I need a step by step guide on how to change a water pump in a 94 plymouth sundance duster?
Is the water pump leaking from the weep hole?? If not then it most likely not the problem. You may need to be looking at the radiator. Is it clogged up with dirt, leaves or other debris? You say you have changed the fan motor. I take take it is electric, if it is running and the water pump does not leak then check the radiator.I need a step by step guide on how to change a water pump in a 94 plymouth sundance duster?
I doubt you're going to get anyone to give u a good step by step answer. You could buy a Haynes car repair manual at the auto parts store. They do a decent job of step by step.
Did you check to see if the pump is pumping? Leave off the radiator cap and run the engine. When it reaches operating temperature the coolant in the radiator should start to move indicating the pump is moving the coolant thru the engine block.
PeeWee is right about the weep hole. Not leaking, probably not the pump.

So should i change the cooling system -Hoses- at the same time i get it Flushed, will that eliminate Smoky AF?
AF is AntiFreeze
When i Add AntiFreeze i seem to see Boiling coming from the Expansion Tank
I believe it goes away
My car runs fine
What woudl you do?

How to know whats the source of coolant leak?
had a leak a few weeks ago with my coolant- mechanic replaced the water pump but it is still leaking pretty much the same- he now wants to change the thermostat but how do i know its this and not a problem with the gasket or something else serious? all answers greatly appreciated! How to know whats the source of coolant leak?
you need to choose a decent garage and ask them to pressurise your cooling system to locate the leak which should have been done in the first place if the leak isn`t obvious. How to know whats the source of coolant leak?
You should be able to SEE where a part is leaking. The water pump is easy to see and determine if its shaft bearings were bad. Same with the thermostat, its an internal part, why in the heck would he want to change that? The housing gasket can be observed to see if its leaking. If you have absolutely no outward signs of a leak then you have a more serious problem as 99% of the time it represents a bad head gasket. How to know whats the source of coolant leak?
you could get some uv coolant dye and put it in the radiator and then a leak would light up under a black light. How to know whats the source of coolant leak?
Change mechanic for starters. If he wasn't convinced it was the water pump he should not have replaced it. If it's just a run about that you don't intend keeping long term buy a bottle of radiator sealant, buy a decent one, around 拢12-拢15. Otherwise you will have to try a new garage in my opinion. How to know whats the source of coolant leak?
steam clean the engine and if and when it starts to leak again you will be able to tell where it,s coming from. or lay a big sheet of card board down at night and check it the next morning.

95 Jeep 2.5L, replaced faulty water pump and thermostat, bled system of air and I have no heat?
I have bled the whole system of air and I still don't have any heat. Before changing the water pump and thermostat I had a furnace in my jeep. Now it only blows air slightly warmer than the outside temperature. Heater-core doesn't seem plugged. The inside water temperature gage doesn't move off of the low end and the engine is warm. Engine might be running cool, but not that cool. Should I check the temperature sending unit? If so how? Everything worked fine prior to the water pump going and I did hit 260 on the gage for about 5 minutes. Can't find any wires melted or anything out of the ordinary. I don't want to change another thermostat but at this point it seems like my only option. Please help.95 Jeep 2.5L, replaced faulty water pump and thermostat, bled system of air and I have no heat?
Did you put the right temperature thermostat in? Check a repair manual to make sure you put one with the right temperature rating in.
Did you bleed the system while the heat was on? If not, you may have air trapped in the heater core
Or the blend control door may be stuck.facial hair migrating existing portal

How can I tell if I need a thermostat or a new water pump for my 94 Honda Accord?
The engine is overheating after about thirty minutes of driving.
The oil and anti-freeze levels are fine.
The top radiator hose gets hot, as does the radiator itself.
The heater works fine, blows hot air.
From advice I received, I am gambling on changing the thermostat, but would like to be sure I'm not wasting time and money.
Also, does anyone know of any links which have videos or diagrams of how to change a 94 Honda Accord thermostat?
Thanks! How can I tell if I need a thermostat or a new water pump for my 94 Honda Accord?
Well a thermostat could cause the car to overheat if it was stuck in the closed position. or not opening fully. You could check the thermostat easily by putting it in a pan of water and heating the pan up and see if it opens all the way or opens at all. I did this on some of my cars before. I just looped a piece of wire through the thermostat so I could pull it out of the pan to check it. If you do go through the trouble to check it, I would replace it. Thermostats are cheap and changing it would save doing it perhaps later. If it was your water pump, I would think your car would overheat a lot sooner than 30 minutes. Also, when was the last time you had your cooling system flushed? If a lot of gunk is built up in your radiator, it could cause your car to run hotter. How can I tell if I need a thermostat or a new water pump for my 94 Honda Accord?
I'd suggest that if the top hose %26amp; radiator are hot, then the thermostat is opening properly. The heater blows hot, so it doesn't sound like an air lock. Check that the electric cooling fan works properly, then I'd go for the water pump. How can I tell if I need a thermostat or a new water pump for my 94 Honda Accord?
As long as the top radiator hose is getting hot both the thermostat and water pump are working. The pump has to pump hot coolant through the thermostat to heat the upper radiator hose. (Technically, it is not exactly that because the thermostat is in the lower radiator hose and sampling engine coolant, but the flow is the same.)
From your description of the heat building up over half an hour of driving I suspect the radiator is not working well. That often is the result of blockage, and that most often comes from using tap water (even just once if you are in a hard water area) in the cooling system or using any stop-leak in the cooling system. Radiator insufficiency shows up as the lower radiator hose being about as hot as the upper radiator hose when the engine is overheating (a thermometer, like a meat thermometer, is helpful). Another prime indication of the radiator being bad is the heat building up and never coming down. If the radiator is working the temperature should be returning to normal within a couple minutes of driving, even if the fan is not running. A plugged radiator has to be replaced - I've never known a flush to improve the blockage and rodding is almost as expensive as a new one... leaving you with a weakened and old radiator. How can I tell if I need a thermostat or a new water pump for my 94 Honda Accord?
I'd take it to a shop and have them check to make sure you are not getting combustion gases in the coolant. Since you say it overheats, I'd guess that you have a head gasket issue.

How do i re-fill my car radiator without getting any ait locks?
can anyone help? i have a 1998 ford escort 1.6 16v zetec and i need to change my thermostat, i have no problem doing that its just i know im going to get an air lock as soon as i loose water from the thermostat when i change it, i just need to find out how to re-fill my radiator without getting an air lock, can you please help???
thanksHow do i re-fill my car radiator without getting any ait locks?
after fitting thermostat fill radiator turn your heater to hot dont need blower on leave top off expansion tank and let the engine idle you will see the water rising as air is escaping keep topping water up until no more air comes out the main reason for air locks is because people forget to turn heater up to hot this stops the small radiator inside the car from filling. How do i re-fill my car radiator without getting any ait locks?
Run it up to Temperature with the water cap off
When its up there %26quot;squeeze%26quot; the water pipe below the rad so that the air bubbles come out in the opening of the water cap
When the bubbles stop and its just water coming to the surface then you've got rid of the air lock
Good luckHow do i re-fill my car radiator without getting any ait locks?
Fill it up, run it a while, and it should blow any air up to the top of the system, CAREFULLY..release the air by CAREFULLY removing the cap on the header tank, and then top up when it has cooled down a little.
