Everytime i start and the engine and drive the car until the engine is hot, then two or the three blocks later the engine starts overheating and tells me to stop the vehicle. if your thermostat stuck close then the computer will trigger a code and the MIL (check engine light) will be on...most likely your water pump is broken, an easy way to check is open the cap of the coolant reservoir, have someone rev the engine between 3k and 4k, see if the coolant circulate in the reservoir (the coolant should come out from the smaller coolant line, from upper reservoir), the coolant should comes out fluently and not dripping !!!...good luckHow do i change the thermostat on my 2005 Jetta gli 1.8T thermostat and where is the location of the part?
the thermostat is located behind the alternator inside a black plastic housing with a hose attached to it. when you take it out, stick your finger inside the hole and feel the water pump impeller with your finger, make sure it isn't broken and that it is tight on the shaft. the factory water pumps have plastic impellers that break and fail to circulate coolant.

How do you change a thermostat in a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix?
I haven't looked under the hood of my step daughters car but her boyfriend couldn't get to it. Her boss tried and couldn't get to it. Anyone have any suggestions for when I take a look? Apparently it's in a location that you can't get to which I find hard to believe. It has to be a way to get to it to change it. Follow the upper hose. you should see the wires from the temp sensor protruding from the thermostat housing.
The housing is usually mounted with two bolts.
It is a tight squeeze. remove the mass air hoses if needed for maneuvering. Mine I had to remove a heat deflector of the exhaust manifold for better access.
Drain coolant
Remove the upper hose at the thermostat housing.
The bolt size should be a metric 13mm.
I bought a set of box wrenches with an elbow and ratchet on the end. Expensive but worth it. They are cheap at Lowe's. remember the elbow is important.
I had only 2 degrees movement and took maybe 10min for removal but it was worth not having to remove more compo nets for maneuvering.
Remove old thermostat and gasket. install new one. use appropriate RTV sealant on the housing matting surfaces. tighten

You need a slimline 13mm racheting box end wrench, its a pain and takes a bit of skill but thats all you need. its under the throttle body, you don't have to take anything off except the air duct. make sure the cars cold and just dig down in there with the wrench usually its easiest to reach around the back of the motor, by the brake booster, get the top bolt all the way out and loosen the bottom one, the hole is slotted but you have to get it out almost all the way out to clear the thermostat itself, good luckHow do you change a thermostat in a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix?
You must have the 3.1 Liter engine in this vehicle, upper radiator hose connects to this aluminum neck the goes to LR corner of engine. You are going to have to take off the throttle body, where the throttle cables are connected and after you remove this you can see 1 of the bolts from the top, just loosen the top bolt a couple of turns with a open ended wrench it notched out and doesn't have to be taken out all the way. the bottom one is kind of hard but you can just fit a socket with a extention under the exhause pipe to remove this bolt, this one has to come all the way out. then this aluminum radiator neck should slide out of there. Should be 2-- 13mm bolts holding this on.

My husband and I tried to get the bolts off each side and the one bolt is extremely long. We decided to let it alone. I have a new thermostat as the car lacks heat. Is it hitting something or you just think it shouldn't be that long? Most of the time those housing bolts are about twice as long as they appear that they should be and sometimes it is difficult to get them all the way out because of interference with some other component. One more tip. Be absolutely sure you get the new one in the right direction or you will be worse off than you are now. Sometimes they will not fit incorrectly but sometimes they do. The side with the spring and copper tube on it goes in the engine side. And be sure it is seated in its groove properly or it will not seal.

you remove the coolant hose fitting at the engine, and it's behind there. book labor time is 0.7 hrs. the hard part is getting the air out of the cooling system- you may have to jack up the front of the car to bleed it all out. At a shop, they use a vacuum / pressure filler, which sucks all the air out, then refills it under pressure in about a minute. It may take you an hour to get it out. You'd just have to let it run. The advantage of having a shop do it, is you could probably use a coolant flush anyway. Thermostats are pretty reliable if the coolant is in good shape. You can always call around to other shops, and ask them what they'd charge. They should be able to give you a price over the phone for this, but i'd plan on spending at least $125-150. $200 isn't outrageous. Make certain to remove all of the old gasket material before installing the new thermostat and gasket or you will have more trouble. Go to your local auto parts store and purchase a Chilton manual or something comperable for your car.
