How do i get a broken bolt out of an engine block?

I have a 92 sable. I was changing the thermostat. I tightened all three bolts on the housing to 9ft/lbs just as Chiltons' reccomended. The housing leaked from the bottom. so i took it off. cleaned the gastet off. got a new gasket and silicon. applied it tighted to 9ft/lbs. it still leaked. so i tightened tighter. still leaked. so i went to take the housing off so i could get new housing when half of my bottom bolt broke off inside my block. i have about 1/16 of and inch outside of the block. how should i get it out.How do i get a broken bolt out of an engine block?
try filing a slot in it and using a screwdriver.the vise grips is your first best shot as it broke during removal and it should be loose.if it is tight, try a small punch to rotate it.also it sounds like the bolts were too long and they bottomed out.rule of thumb for threaded fasteners; 1.5 times dia will give you max holding power. How do i get a broken bolt out of an engine block?
You might also try heating the bolt first. You can drill it and use an easy out with a socket.

can you grab it with vice grips? How do i get a broken bolt out of an engine block?
What you can do is get a easy-out they come in different sizes depending on the bolt that you have or how excessable it is to get to or they also have bolt outs also. How do i get a broken bolt out of an engine block?
If the vise grips don't get it sometimes using a left hand drill bit in a reversible drill will unscrew it. If it's in a place that you can't reach with a drill or vice grips you may have to pull the engine to get at it. Good luckHow do i get a broken bolt out of an engine block?
Easy out kit..

Or a drill, tap, %26amp; extract kit

Either one will work.
